Santorini Sailing founders Ted and Dina Stathis, one Greek-American and the other a Greek-Australian have been living in Santorini since 1995. After a frustrated search for a sailboat that could take them to the hard to get to beaches and bays, they found out that no one provided such a service on a sailing vessel! Only large crowded old wooden boats that just cruised around in the Caldera and never sailed.
Captain Ted, having loved sailing as a kid decided with Dina that there was a better way to see the island, and to offer this to visitors willing to share such a special experience. They started with a mono-hull sailboat that they had rented for the season. They started out with this idea to offer guests an opportunity to see some popular destinations, beautiful Santorini sunsets in the Caldera, however also sailing them to isolated beautiful spots for private swims and snorkeling trips. There they would prepare Greek mezedes and serve cool drinks. As time went by, they noticed how popular and how much in demand their tours were, so they decided to buy their own boat. Blue Lagoon, a 41ft Lagoon sailing catamaran was introduced in 2002. A catamaran, as opposed to a monohull offered guests greater comfort and space while under sail. They took much pride in sharing great days out with visitors, and this gradually evolved from preparing and serving Greek mezedes to lavish seafood and meat barbeques complete with multiple side dishes. Many of their guests have claimed that the food served is the best they have had on the island!
In the coming years, having succesful write ups in a number of international magazines and newspapers they decided to buy their second catamaran with Dina's brother and sister-in-law Theo and Helen Karakiklas. "Triton" was introduced and met every level of quality and service as Blue Lagoon. Triton is a luxurious 43ft Lagoon, power catamaran that has much faster capabilities to take people to other islands and remote destinations, which was in high demand. The unprecedented level of service, safety and fun on board, together with the outstanding cuisine continued and so did more recognition from Samantha Brown on the Discovery Channel's Passport to Europe and with Giada on The Food Channel's Giada in Paradise episode. Captain Ted has become famous for his "shrimp saganaki". He has grown up with the love of cooking as a small child watching his grandmother and family cook traditional Greek dishes.
The fleet now consists of three luxurious catamarans, the latest, Blue Lagoon II, purchased in 2008 with Ted's sister and brother-in-law Tina and Jim Nicholas. Before Captain Ted expanded the business, he had his brother-in-laws work with him for several seasons to ensure that all tours on all boats reached the same unsurpassed level of service that guests have come to expect.
Being family owned and operated, they take pride in ensuring all guests have memories that will last long after they have left beautiful Santorini!
